The Songs of David Bowie…
Re-Imagined Featuring Oliver Darley and Chad Lelong

The second in an exciting series of contemporary jazz evenings at Bishop’s Court Farm

16th April 2023

“A voice that could sing the angels to sleep and wake the devil from his bed.” Ray Charles

Following their recent sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe, Oliver Darley and pianist Chad Lelong will be unveiling their stunning debut album – The Seat With The Clearest View – with an exclusive performance in the convivial surroundings of Bishop’s Court Farm.

Featuring the songs of David Bowie as you’ve never heard them before, Darley dives deep beneath the surface of some of these timeless classics, stripping each one down to its bare essentials. Covering every aspect of Bowie’s chameleonic career from Space Oddity through to Life On Mars?, The Seat With The Clearest View somehow manages to remain reassuringly familiar and yet utterly unlike anything Bowie fans would ever expect.

This special show will be hosted by the Executive Producer of the album – BBC broadcaster, Jonathan Wingate – who worked as David Bowie’s Spokesman for many years.

• Jonathan Wingate – Host
• Oliver Darley – Vocals
• Chad Lelong – Piano
• Jamie McCredie – Guitar

A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong Featuring Jo Harrop, Andy Davies and Alex Hutton

The third show in an exciting series of contemporary jazz evenings at Bishop’s Court Farm

30th April 2023

“A very fine jazz singer. When she sings, she moves me.” Iggy Pop – BBC 6 Music
Having received unanimous critical acclaim for her last three albums, Jo Harrop recently sold out two shows at Ronnie Scott’s and a string of dates in New York’s most prestigious jazz clubs. Blessed with a chocolate and cream voice that is delicately poised between beguiling sensuality and exquisite fragility, her mellifluous music could melt the hardest of hearts.

For this very special one-off performance, she will be joined by trumpeter Andy Davies and pianist Alex Hutton to celebrate the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Between 1956 – 1959 they recorded three timeless albums (Ella and Louis, Ella and Louis Again and Porgy and Bess). Although Fitzgerald and Satchmo’s singing styles could not have been more different, together they enjoyed a symbiotic musical connection which still sounds utterly irresistible after all these years.

• Jo Harrop – Vocals
• Alex Hutton – Piano
• Andy Davies – Trumpet
• Jihad Darwish – Bass

Ian Shaw – The Magic of Joni Mitchell

The fourth show in an exciting series of contemporary jazz evenings at Bishop’s Court Farm

‘Shaw captures the poetry in Joni’s songs with an eye-watering vocal range. If you’re into jazz but not Joni, don’t be put off.’ BBC Music

One of the finest voices in British jazz, Ian Shaw has collaborated with an array of legendary stars including Quincy Jones and Van Morrison.

Multi award-winning singer and pianist Ian Shaw performs a powerful solo show celebrating one of the greatest songwriters of all time. He was the first male artist to record an entire album of Joni Mitchell’s songs (Drawn To All Things), gaining plaudits and new fans the world over. This unique show reflects the wit, emotion and storytelling of Mitchell’s rich songbook.

With a warm and instantly recognisable style all his own, Ian Shaw has won numerous awards and released a string of critically acclaimed albums. Dubbed ‘one of the UK’s most musical jazz vocalists’ by the Guardian, Shaw has performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages – from New York’s Jazz At The Lincoln Center to London’s Ronnie Scott’s.

Ciyo Brown’s Acoustic Soul Sessions featuring Geraldine Reid

The fifth show in an exciting series of contemporary jazz evenings at Bishop’s Court Farm

4th June 2023

One of the most in-demand and virtuosic guitarists in British music, Ciyo Brown has worked with an eclectic list of iconic musicians including Annie Lennox, Paul Weller and Pee Wee Ellis.

Known as ‘the Gentleman of Jazz’ and frequently compared to George Benson, his laid-back liquid licks are unmistakable. For this special show, he’ll be joining forces with singer Geraldine Reid, mixing up a cool cocktail of jazz and soul classics in their own inimitable style. After last year’s unforgettable performance, we are delighted to be welcoming them back to Bishop’s Court Farm as part of the second season of Snug Sessions shows.

• Geraldine Reid – Vocals
• Ciyo Brown – MD/Guitar

• Sean Hargreaves – Piano

Claire Martin OBE with Rob Barron (piano) – The Great American Songbook

The sixth show in an exciting series of contemporary jazz evenings at Bishop’s Court Farm

18th June 2023 – Father’s Day

‘Our finest jazz singer.’ Clive Davis – The Times

Making her Snug Sessions debut at Bishop’s Court Farm, we are honoured to welcome multi award-winning jazz singer and BBC Radio 2 presenter, Claire Martin.

Having cut her teeth collaborating with a string of seminal musicians including Kenny Barron, Stéphane Grappelli and John Martyn, she has released an array of critically acclaimed albums and established herself as one of the most unmistakable voices in jazz.

Accompanied by pianist Rob Barron, she will be performing reworkings of some of her favourite classics such as I Love Being Here With You, P.S I Love You and The Folks That Live On The Hill. Of course, there will also be a rendition of My Heart Belongs To Daddy to celebrate Father’s Day.

While the prospect of tackling iconic material made famous by legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee would be daunting for some, Claire Martin somehow manages to breathe new life into these wonderful Great American Songbook evergreens.

The Ray Charles Project – The Jeremy Sassoon Quintet

The seventh show in an exciting series of contemporary jazz evenings at Bishop’s Court Farm

Jeremy Sassoon has won huge acclaim over recent years with his astonishingly authentic homage to the King Of Soul, Ray Charles. Together with his drum-tight quintet, Sassoon swings his way through the peerless Ray Charles songbook on a magical journey that goes from Hit The Road Jack and What’d I Say to Unchain My Heart and Georgia On My Mind.

Whether he’s playing R&B, soul, country or blues, Jeremy Sassoon somehow manages to get to the very heart of Brother Ray’s unique music. This brilliant band needs no excuse to Let The Good Times Roll.

• Pat Illingworth – Drums

The Music Of Bill Evans Featuring The Paul Edis Trio with Special Guest Noa Levy

The eighth show in an exciting series of contemporary jazz evenings at Bishop’s Court Farm

16th July 2023

‘A brilliant young pianist.’ The Guardian

Nobody sounds quite like Paul Edis or transports you to the places he travels to with his meditative music. Having received unanimous critical acclaim for his last studio album, The Still Point Of The Turning World, Edis has immersed himself in the exquisite work of Bill Evans – widely considered to be the most important and influential pianist in the history of jazz.

This very special show will feature the sublime voice of critically acclaimed San Franciscan singer, Noa Levy, who will be performing a selection of standards which were a vital part of Bill Evans’ repertoire.

Many people will know Evans from his work with Miles Davis on Kind Of Blue. Davis said he had “quiet fire,” which perfectly encapsulates his mesmerising and understated playing style. Like Evans, Paul Edis plays without a trace of bombast or affectation. Simultaneously soothing and stirring, rapturous yet relaxed, at times the melodies almost appear to become subservient to the dreamlike mood of the music.

• Paul Edis – MD/Piano
• Matt Home – Drums
• Adam King – Bass
• Noa Levy – Vocals
